About the Book

Who will rescue Chico’s starving village?

Life is caving in for the family of Chico, a young boy living in a poor, rural community in Honduras. A huge rain destroys the corn crop and washes away the road into town, so no supply trucks can enter. Then the chickens die. Other kids’ families are in the same situation.

Chico is sent to the other side of the mountains to try to save his town of Reitoca. There he meets believers in Jesus, who send a man in a green Jeep to help. Not only does the man bring Reitoca food but also the Bread of Life-the story of Jesus.

Missionary author Viola Palmer gives a captivating glance into children’s lives and culture in Central America. Enter the world of Chico and his friends, Rafael, Jose, Marvin, and Calvin, the “bully-turned-nice”, and their experiences. Learn about missions through the work of “the man in the green Jeep.

The book is endorsed by the president of Awanas Clubs International, Jack D. Eggar, and by the executive director of Woman’s Missionary Union, Wanda Lee.

This Mom’s Review

This is a story of a young boy’s troubles and the changed lives made by a visitor to the boy’s community.  It is a powerful story of what missions is all about.

From this story, I learned and/or was reminded that:

  • Salvation is available for everyone – child and adult, the mean and the ‘good’
  • The saved need to put God’s love into action by serving others, followed with the gospel message

I was refreshed by the actions of the man in the green jeep and the others giving their time and resources to help a starving community in need.  More importantly, their loving actions brought lost souls to Christ.

I wanted to read this with my kiddos, but they’ve had a busy summer.  So, I read it alone.  I read it in two days.  My kiddos should easily be able to read a chapter or more each day.  Included in the back of the book are study questions great for helping the children (and adults) reading this book to think about what they’ve read.

I recommend this book to both adults and children.

I received a copy of this book from Hannibal Books in exchange for my honest review.  You can grab a copy from Hannibal Books, Amazon.com or your local bookstore.
